Songs about death that are really about life Views: 1097

Rehearsals, well the majority of the last two anyway, have been about learning two new songs. One I mentioned I think, 'Scott Free' and the other is 'Quite a Catch'. Well, the first one isn't about death but the other one is, it's about a woman who's life looks fine on the surface but underneath she is moving towards the end and eventually kills herself. Well, it only takes four verses but this is obviously artistic licence! Sometimes when I write songs I wonder how much of it is autobiographical and how much is just playing with ideas. Testing out limits in a safe way, telling the truth but not the whole truth, playing with the edges of the past and reworking the bad into something good. Of course sometimes it is very clear to me where the songs come from but not always.

I have written several songs about death but mainly they tend to be about life really, the importance of living life as best you can cos the end is hurtling towards us. I have often been heard to say that I have always walked with the hand of death on my shoulder, I think that's why I am always rushing around doing things, busy busy, quick before you run out of time! Yell Anyway, I thought I'd post some lyrics from one of those songs here for you to read. Not the ones mentioned above but another one. This is one we can play but rarely do, it being more suited to a folk club and we do mostly blues type gigs lately, when it has been out it has been well received and will be on the next album. Anyway it's called 'What about now?', see what you think.

What about now?

 Moment passed, gone

In the twinkling of an eye

Flowers bloom, the words we speak

The children grow, answers we seek

Somehow missed a trick

Can’t figure out how

Keep it in the moment

What about now?

Minutes tick by

Swift like the whistling wind

Full moon up, the longing look

The children laugh, the time we took

Somehow missed a trick

Can’t figure out how

Keep it in the moment

What about now?

Years they fly on

Faster than sound or light

Sunrisedawn, the sigh so sad

Children no more, both good and bad

Somehow missed a trick

Can’t figure out how

Keep it in the moment

What about now?

Endings approach

No other way to do it

Setting sun, teardrops fall

Mindful now to see it all

Somehow missed a trick

Can’t figure out how

Keep it in the moment

What about now?
